Roger Rabbit’s huge impact on Disney’s fortunes are often overlooked. It is said, however, that Max’s design influenced Warner Brothers animators in 1940 when they debuted their own over confident wise cracking rabbit character, Bugs Bunny. Eventually, they were phased out and really not discussed much in Disney fan circles. Max and Toby were so popular that they were given a sequel, and popped up in the background of other shorts. Merchandise, toys, games and books with their images sold well, right alongside Mickey and Minnie. Max and Toby became breakout stars in the early days of the Disney Studios, before Snow White and the other feature films came along. The title characters were Toby Tortoise and Max Hare.

In 1935, Walt chose to feature The Tortoise and the Hare as part of his popular Silly Symphony series of shorts. The hare goofs off so much that he loses focus and by the time he realizes that the tortoise – who has moved slowly and confidently towards the goal without distraction – is going to beat him, it’s too late. It’s a cautionary tale about over-confidence, where a rabbit feels superior to a turtle who decides to race him, because his speed makes him unbeatable, and that he doesn’t have to work 100% to get the job done and get to the finish line. The fable of the Tortoise and the Hare dates back centuries. Walt often said it all started with a mouse, but in reality it was a rabbit. He’s since gained a whole new generation of fans. Oswald was quickly integrated into Disney’s cartoons, video games, merchandise and parks. That’s right: A human being was traded for a cartoon character. Iger offered Michaels in a straight up swap with Universal for the rights to Walt’s early Oswald shorts and character. They wanted ABC/Disney sportscaster Al Michaels to host, but he was still under contract.

Universal’s NBC network had just signed a deal with the NFL to air Sunday Night Football games. That was fixed in 2006, in a most unusual way.Įncouraged by Walt’s daughter, Diane Disney Miller, Disney CEO Bob Iger made a strange trade with Universal to bring Oswald back into the Disney family. It gnawed at Walt for years that his first successful cartoon character was owned by another company. Universal continued making Oswald shorts (done by another Walt, Woody Woodpecker creator Walter Lantz) for a few years, but the rabbit paled in comparison to Mickey, so he was phased out. He debuted in New York City in “Steamboat Willie” later that year. Mintz double crossed Walt, stealing away most of his animators and using a clause in the contract to keep the rights for Oswald as Universal’s property.Īlways an optimist, Walt left New York on a train and on the ride home dreamed up the replacement character for Oswald, a design that would become Mickey Mouse. Around Easter time in 1928, Walt went to New York City to meet with Winkler’s business partner, Charles Mintz, about renewing the contract for Oswald cartoon shorts. Oswald was distributed by Margaret Winkler, through Universal Studios. Created in collaboration with some of his best animators, like Ub Iwerks and Friz Freling, who followed him from Kansas City to Hollywood, Oswald was one of many cartoon characters at the time who relied on zany madcap adventures. Oswald The Lucky Rabbit was his first big hit cartoon character. Any products that can be tumble-dried will indicate so on their care label.This is where it all began for Walt. The heat from tumble-drying can cause fading, shrinkage, and may reduce the lifespan of the garment's quality.
